So, where is Southend? Southend lies in the very South-East of Essex. Being in the South-East we have 7 miles of beachy coastline to the South, lush, green countryside to the North and the metropolis that is the city of London 40 miles to the West.

There are two separate train lines that go from central Southend directly to the City of London in under an hour- C2C and Greater Anglia Abellio. Southend Central takes you via the C2C direct to London Fenchurch Street via Basildon or Thurrock. Southend Victoria takes you via the Greater Anglia Abellio line direct to Stratford and London Liverpool Street via Shenfield.  We also have two main roads taking you to the heart of London in about the same time.

Of course we’re on the Thames too so if you had the urge to opt for the slightly less conventional method of transport, you could always take the Kayak directly to Central London!

The upgrade of London Southend airport in 2012 signified the importance of Southend, not just on a national level, but internationally too! From Central Southend you can reach Paris, Amsterdam and Groningen in just over an hour. In other words, international customers from Paris, Amsterdam and Groningen can get to you… in just over an hour! Southend Airport now travels to some major European destinations including Antwerp, Barcelona, Budapest, Dublin, Glasgow, Lyon, Manchester, Prague and Vienna to name just a few. This is a growing list, truly putting Southend on the international map!

Southend Airport has a new station on the Greater Abellio line, two stops from Southend Victoria and boasts the shortest distance in the UK between train and plane!

Thanks to our partners at CityFibre, Southend has just installed a whole network of ‘dark fibre’ infrastructure under our feet. In real terms this means internet speeds are set to soar from an average of 40Mbps to 1000Mbps. That’s fast! It also means Southend-On-Sea is quickly turning into the place for tech businesses to start-up and thrive!

The Hive has been keen to include this in our #TechCityOnSea programme for more information!

Shoreditch is seemingly the place to be, but it comes at tremendous cost, especially when you bolt on the additional cost of the commute.

Property prices in Southend-On-Sea are significantly cheaper than in London. As a knock-on affect you can expect to pay a lot less for your office space at a significantly higher quality!

There are some fantastic office spaces in the centre of Southend including the very cool business hot-desking and serviced office hub, the Hive Enterprise Centre.

As part of an Essex wide business network, Southend-on-Sea council has several fully funded, dedicated business support services:BEST Growth Hub, The INVEST Essex and NWES to name just a few. These services are set up to assist local businesses to survive and thrive by offering funding and support.

Business support tends to be distributed by local authority, so the offer to your business can vary depending on where your business is based. The Southend business community is thriving offering a huge array of networking events and funded masterclasses. For more information about what’s on offer to Southend based businesses check out Business-on-Sea.

Check out the following sites for each local authority in South-Essex: Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Maldon, Rochford, Thurrock Although the BEST Growth Hub offers a free catch-all service for business support no matter where you are based in Essex.

In August 2016, Leigh-on-Sea was named the happiest place to live in the whole of the UK by Rightmove. Leigh-on-Sea sits about two and a half miles away from Central Southend. There’s a reason for this. Everyone’s so happy, mostly because it’s a nice, affordable area, with fantastic train links to London (not to mention air links to Paris!) and within walking distance to the beach.
